REGISTRATION - 2012

             Sandys Boat Club Junior Sailing Programme offers 2-week ½ day sessions in either the morning or the afternoon. See below to first select a Course type (according to sailing ability), then select session dates, and determine morning or afternoon session.

Note that beginners are scheduled for morning sessions – this is flexible – if there is demand for afternoon beginner sailing then we may change course type to meet this demand.

Beginner Optimist	8 years or older, weighs less than 100 pounds, is a confident swimmer, has no or little experience in an Optimist
Intermediate Optimist/Byte	8 years or older, weighs less than 125 pounds, is a confident swimmer, has sailed at least 2 sessions in an Optimist and is confident at all three points of sail/discretion of the instructor
Racing Optimist/Byte	Discretion of the instructor

****It is critical that your child be placed in the right level for their experience and ability. AM optimist sessions will be divided into two groups, one with the slightly more experienced or/and mature students. If in doubt, go down rather than up. ****

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is my child’s friend  in this course?

I am not comfortable releasing information like this. Please call your child’s friend before signing up. Remember, riding with friends helps out with bus/ferry taking or/and carpooling!

 

What are the pick-up and drop-off times?

AM sessions begin at 9AM for the Optis and Bytes. Sailors need to be picked up/leave  by 12:15.

PM sessions begin at 1:30 for both Optis and Bytes. All sailors should be picked up/leave by 4:45.

There is a bus approximately every 15 minutes, and there is a zebra crossing on the road. Check the Blue route ferry schedule for ferries to Watford Bridge, it is only a 5-7 min walk to SBC from Watford Bridge.

 

What does my child need to bring?

Your child needs a properly fitting lifejacket, worn over a sun shirt or bathing suit (girls need shorts, note that boy’s bathing suit shorts work best). They also need properly fitting water shoes or sneakers that can be worn in the water. Sunscreen and a hat are musts, as is a water bottle. Everything must be clearly labeled! Please bring a clean empty detergent bottle for use as a bailer.

 

Are there discounts available?  

Optimist Courses	$250 regular price for a 2-week half day course	Less $20 per child for members or $10 for the organizer for volume of 3+
Byte Courses	$260 regular price for a 2-week half day course	Less $20 per child for members or as above for volume

How many children will be in the program?

There are a maximum of twelve children per session. Sailors will be supervised by the Head Instructor, one Junior Instructor, and up to two Junior Assistant Instructors, if numbers permit.

 

Can my child take more than one course?

Certainly, but not morning and afternoon in the same session. For most children, this is too long a day for an extended period in the sun. Please note that some children may be ready to move on to intermediate classes after only one session, but this is not usual.

 

What happens if my child has to drop out of a course?

If a child has to drop out of a course before it starts, then their session fee less a $25 deposit will be returned. If the child can make up a course by attending another session, and we can accommodate this, we will do so with no additional charge. However, we cannot allow a child to “split” a session by taking a week here and there unless there is space available. If a child drops out mid-course for a medical reason, 50% of the fee will be refunded.
